Volunteer Spotlight Junior Achievement of Eastern Iowa Volunteer of the Month - June 2011: Brent Hawkins, MidWestOne Bank, Iowa City
Junior Achievement's Volunteer of the Month for May is Brent Hawkins, Branch Manager for MidWestOne Bank on Keokuk Street in Iowa City and five year Junior Achievement classroom volunteer. Brent started volunteering with us in 2007 at the elementary school level with 2nd graders. Since then he has tranisitioned to high school aged students teaching the JA Titan program and JA Banks in Action, but continues his work with elementary students.
Brent's ability to instruct students from elementary age to the high school level is a valuable asset in a volunteer. His enthusiasm for the programs he teaches is also a very important quality and evident in his descriptions of classroom experiences. Brent said, "Junior Achievement is a great way to get involved in the community. I really enjoy seeing the reactions of the kids when you teach them a concept and it sinks in for them. It's a lot of fun and they learn a lot, too."
His favorite lesson is "You Can Bank On It", part of the "Our City" program. This lesson allows him to use his day to day work experience to help kids learn an important lesson - how to carry out banking transactions.
Thank you, Brent, for your commitment to Junior Achievement and for the enthusiasm you put forth in each lesson. We appreciate your support!
